PastView Maps publishes step-by-step guides to finding historical aerial photographs, satellite imagery, old topographic maps and elevation data. Each guide uses official or publicly documented sources and shows what the tools actually return, including their limits.
What you will find here
- Where to search for old aerial photos and satellite images, and how far back each source goes.
- How to read old topographic maps and compare them with current maps.
- How to look up the elevation of a place and how accurate the result is.
How the guides are made
For each guide we run the same searches in the tools we describe, using public landmarks rather than private homes, and record what was returned and on which date. The method is explained on the How We Test page.

Important limits
The guides are for general information. Historical images and maps can be incomplete, distorted or out of date, and elevation values depend on the data source. Do not use them as a substitute for a professional land survey or legal advice. See also our Terms of Use.
